Foremilk & Hindmilk, What does this mean?

Isn’t it amazing that our breast milk changes throughout a feeding in order to give our babies exactly what their bodies need?! 🍼🤱🏻

However, it can be confusing when you are concerned about your “foremilk & hindmilk imbalance” 🙍‍♀️

Mamas often misunderstand the subject of foremilk and hindmilk and get stressed or worried.

Well don’t you worry mama, today we will explain the difference between these 2️⃣ and you might find that there’s less to be concerned about than you actually think.

What is foremilk & hindmilk? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Foremilk is the first milk your baby receives at the beginning of a feeding and hindmilk is the milk that you produce towards the end of a feeding.

Some mamas get confused and think foremilk and hindmilk are 2️⃣ different types of breast milk (THEY ARE NOT)🙅🏽‍♀️. It is true that foremilk is lower in fat and higher in milk sugar lactose and hindmilk more creamier and more calorie-rich, but the difference is small 🤏.

Your breasts are not switching between producing one or the other type of breast milk. As a matter of fact, your breast milk fat content has to do with how much time has passed between feedings🤱.

‼️CONCLUSION …

Foremilk & hindmilk are NOT different types of milk!

The foremilk your baby receives at the beginning of a feeding is more watery 💦 and baby receives more of the higher fat🍦hindmilk as the nursing session continues.

KEEP IN MIND:

The transition is gradual and the overall lactose, fat and water content of your breast milk during feedings will depend on how long it has been since you last nursed. Note that both types of milk are important and designed to meet your baby’s needs.
